Learning Models
Independent Study
Our Independent Study model provides a great degree of flexibility. Students complete much of their work at home, on their own schedule, with learning materials designed to fit students' needs. Students in grades 6-12 need to complete work daily and check in with their teachers on a daily basis. Students in grades 9-12 will meet with their supervising teacher at least once per week, either in person or virtually, to check in on progress and access support. Successful students come on campus daily to work in their classrooms.
Students working under the Independent Study model must be able to complete their work on their own with minimal support compared to traditional instruction. This being the case, Independent Study is best suited to students who are self-motivated, have significant responsibilities outside of school, or have social and emotional difficulties that prevent them from attending school daily and in person.
Direct Instruction High School
Surfside also offers a credit recovery program to help students regain credits in classes that they have previously failed. Students attend daily for periods 1-5. Successful students can gain up to 100 credits per school year. Our program is based on a 4 quarter system within the school year.
Students must be 16 years of age to attend our direct instruction program.
